Shields Homers, has 3 Hits as Chargers Close Regular Season With Win at Illinois Central

EAST PEORIA — Jack Shields homered and was one of four Chargers with a three-hit night as the Carl Sandburg College baseball team wrapped up the regular season with a 9-6 win at Illinois Central on Wednesday in a nine-inning contest.

KEY MOMENTS
• The Chargers scored three in the first and three in the third en route to an early 6-0 lead. Mitch Ball and Bryce Brown opened the game with back-to-back doubles before Shields lined a two-run homer to center for a 3-0 lead three batters in.
• After Brown walked and Shields singled to start the third, Logan Van Heuklon brought in a run with a base hit to center. Hunter Caves delivered a two-run single to left with two outs in the inning to make it 6-0.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Shields finished 3 for 5, drove in two and scored twice. The homer was his ninth of the season, and his two RBIs pushed his team-leading total to 57.

REGION IV SECTIONAL STARTS FRIDAY AT KANKAKEE
The Chargers earned the fifth seed in the Region IV Division II sectional, which will be played Friday and Saturday at fourth-seeded Kankakee. Sandburg will open the three-team, modified double-elimination tournament at 9 a.m. Friday against No. 9 seed Highland. The Chargers went 3-1 against Highland in the regular season and split four contests with the host Cavaliers.

The winner advances to the Region IV Division II finals to be played May 18-20 at the highest remaining seed. The schedule for the tournament is below.
