Chargers Bow Out to Golden Eagles in Region Semifinals

MADISON, Wis. — The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team's postseason run came to an end Saturday with a 25-16, 25-22, 25-15 loss to Rock Valley in the semifinals of the Region 4 Division II District B tournament.

The sixth-seeded Chargers, winners of their second straight Arrowhead Conference title during the regular season, finished 2023 with a record of 26-15. The loss marked the first time in eight seasons Sandburg did not play for the region championship.

The Chargers' attack was unable to find its footing offensively against the Golden Eagles, hitting just .055 for the match.

Freshman Natalie Burden led Sandburg with seven kills in the defeat and went on to be selected to the all-tournament team. Addison DeSpain, AJ Rask, Ayla Cannon and Lillian Isenhour each added five kills.

All-region selection Grace Vyhnanek had 20 assists for the Chargers. DeSpain and Lauren Powell each had 10 digs to lead the Chargers defensively. Cannon added three solo blocks.

Third-seeded Rock Valley advanced to Sunday's finals, where it beat No. 2 Madison in three sets to qualify for the national tournament.
