Chargers Drop 2 Matches at Warrior Triangular

OTTUMWA, Iowa — The Carl Sandburg College volleyball team concluded its most challenging stretch of the season so far Friday as the Chargers dropped a pair of matches at the Warrior Triangular hosted by Indian Hills.

Sandburg was swept by the host Warriors — who are receiving votes in the NJCAA Division I rankings — 25-22, 25-14, 28-26 in the opening match and then lost 25-18, 25-14, 25-19 to Kirkwood, the No. 6 team in NJCAA Division II. The matches came on the heels of the Chargers (12-6) playing Wednesday at 16th-ranked Illinois Central.

Ayla Cannon had team-bests of eight kills and four blocks in the loss to Indian Hills. Libero Madeline Mooney had 15 digs and two aces. Lauren Powell also served a pair of aces and picked up seven digs.

Natalie Burden contributed six kills for the Chargers, and setter Grace Vyhnanek had 17 assists.

Against Kirkwood, Addison DeSpain tied Burden for the team lead with six kills. DeSpain also led the Chargers defensively with 13 digs and served both Sandburg aces in the match.

Mooney had 10 digs in the loss, and Vyhanek totaled 21 assists.
