Kisler reaches 1,000 career points as Chargers take down Waubonsee in Region 4 quarters
SUGAR GROVE — Antonia Kisler reached a major milestone, and the Sandburg women's basketball team got a major victory.
With their sophomore standout leading the way and eclipsing 1,000 points for her career, the Chargers knocked off Waubonsee 64-62 on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the Region 4 Division II District A tournament.
Kisler finished with team highs of 28 points and 12 rebounds to power Sandburg (22-9), the No. 9 seed in the region, past the eighth-seeded Chiefs and into the semifinals at noon Saturday against top-seeded Moraine Valley. The game will be played at Rock Valley in Rockford.
Needing 12 points to reach 1,000 for her career, Kisler blew past the mark as she finished 12 of 30 from the floor and 3 of 4 from the free-throw line. The Galesburg product now has 1,016 points in her two seasons with the Chargers, averaging 16.1 points in 63 outings.
Still, Sandburg needed to survive a late threat by the hosts. The Chargers led 30-19 at halftime but saw Waubonsee cut the lead to 41-38 entering the fourth quarter.
Ahead 61-59 in the final minute, Kisler knocked down a long jumper to put Sandburg up by four with :15.5 to play. Waubonsee missed a game-tying free-throw attempt with :07.1 left, and Chargers freshman Lajaya Angel split a pair of foul shots at :05.9 for a 64-62 lead.
The Chiefs had a look in the lane to push the game into overtime, but their jump hook at the buzzer hit off the back room, sending Sandburg into the semis.
Camryn Atterberg had 11 points and eight rebounds in the win for the Chargers. The freshman forward also had three steals and three assists.
Tiera Hall, Hailey Redding and Angel each finished with six points. Hall had team bests of seven assists and four steals, and Angel added four assists.
