Chargers nearly pull off comeback win at Madison, will head to Waubonsee for Region 4 quarterfinals

MADISON — The Sandburg women's basketball team came back from a big deficit to take a fourth-quarter lead, but the Chargers lost their final game of the regular season 78-75 at Madison on Saturday afternoon.

The loss snapped a five-game win streak for Sandburg, which will open the Region 4 tournament with a quarterfinal contest at Waubonsee at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Sandburg (21-9) is the No. 9 seed in the tournament, while the host Chiefs are earned the No. 8 seed in the bracket.

The winner will play in the semifinals at noon Saturday at Rock Valley against the winner of top-seeded Moraine Valley and No. 16 seed Kishwaukee. Sandburg and Waubonsee didn't meet in the regular season. The championship is scheduled for noon March 7, also at Rock Valley.

The Chargers trailed 26-7 after the opening quarter of Saturday's contest at Madison, and Sandburg faced a deficit as large as 21 points. The Chargers, though, battled back to tie the game in the third and took a 68-67 lead on Hailey Redding's 3-pointer with 6:26 to play in the contest.

Tiera Hall's layup with 1:45 left evened the score at 75, but the WolfPack took the lead for good with :50 left as Maddi Desmet hit the second of two free throws.

Redding ended with 25 points, including a 3-for-7 day from 3-point range. It was the third straight game with at least 20 points for the freshman from Abingdon-Avon High School.

Antonia Kisler had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Chargers as she moved closer to reaching 1,000 points in her career. The sophomore from Galesburg is now 12 points shy of the mark.

Hall had 12 points and eight boards in the loss for Sandburg.
