Chargers blast Black Hawk on Sophomore Night for 5th in a row

GALESBURG — The Sandburg women's basketball team sent its sophomores off in emphatic fashion.

The Chargers closed their regular-season home schedule by thumping Black Hawk 88-46 on Sophomore Night on Tuesday, giving Sandburg its fifth straight victory and eighth in the last nine games. The Chargers (21-8, 9-1), who clinched their third straight Arrowhead Conference title last week, took it to the Braves early as they put together perhaps their finest first half of the season.

Leading 8-6 midway through the opening quarter, Sandburg closed the period with 18 of the last 20 points. Sophomore Antonia Kisler keyed the run with three consecutive 3-point makes, and Tyriunna Steele also had a trey during the stretch.

After a Black Hawk bucket to open the second made it 26-10, the Chargers rattled off 13 consecutive points. Hailey Redding opened the run with back-to-back baskets, and she added a three-point play later in the burst. Sandburg wound up taking a 51-23 lead into halftime.

Kisler and Tiera Hall — who along with Steele, Paige HuffmanJanessa Wallace and Lillian Covarrubias were taking part in their final home contest — each had double-doubles in the win.

Kisler finished with 27 points as she went 10 of 21 from the field, 5 for 9 from distance and pulled in 12 rebounds. It was the seventh game this season of 20-plus points by the sophomore from Galesburg.

Hall turned in 12 points on 5-for-12 shooting while also grabbing a team-best 13 rebounds and posting four steals.

Redding, who got the Chargers' scoring started with consecutive 3s, finished with 22 points while coming off the bench. It marked the freshman's eighth 20-point game of the season. She also had seven rebounds.

Freshman Camryn Atterberg grabbed 11 rebounds in a reserve appearance, and she blocked a team-high four shots.

The Chargers finish the regular season Saturday at Madison and will learn their opponent for the Region 4 quarterfinals later this weekend. Visit sandburgchargers.com for details on Sandburg's postseason.
