Chargers edged by Blackhawks at home despite draining 14 3s

GALESBURG — The Sandburg women's basketball team came out red hot in the first half and finished with 14 3-pointers but couldn't close out Southeastern on Tuesday in a 77-76 loss.

KEY MOMENTS
• The Chargers hit nine first-half triples and led by as many as 21 points in the opening two quarters before going into the locker room up 39-24.
• A Paige Huffman trey put Sandburg ahead 59-42 late in the third, but the Blackhawks scored the next 12 points to pull within five in the opening minute of the fourth. An 8-0 run put Southeastern ahead 67-64 with 5:50 to play.
• Back-to-back 3s from Tyriunna Steele and Antonia Kisler put the Chargers back ahead 70-67 with 5:00 to go, but that would be Sandburg's last lead of the night. Southeastern answered with a 9-2 stretch to take the lead for good.
• Down 77-76, two missed free throws by Southeastern with :09 left gave the Chargers a chance to win it, but Kisler's 3-point try at the buzzer was partially blocked and fell short.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Sophomore point guard Lillian Covarrubias scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting before exiting with an injury in the fourth quarter. Covarrubias was 3 of 5 from beyond the arc, dished out four assists and had a pair of steals.

Hailey Redding: 11 points, eight rebounds
Tiera Hall: 15 rebounds (nine offensive), four assists
