Chargers' upset bid thwarted by late run from No. 9 Loggers
GALESBURG — The Sandburg women's basketball team nearly knocked off ninth-ranked Lincoln Land, but a late Loggers run was the difference in a 66-60 loss for the Chargers in their season opener Tuesday at John Lewis Gym.
KEY MOMENTS
• Sandburg (0-1) trailed by double digits in the third quarter and faced a 52-43 deficit entering the fourth. The Chargers scored 15 of the first 19 points in the final period to take the lead at 58-56. Capre Ferguson's layup at 3:51 tied the game, and Lillian Covarrubias found Gabbie Vontz for a layup at 3:20 to give Sandburg its first lead since 32-30.
• Still 58-56 with 2:06 to go, the Chargers committed a foul on a Sam Lindhorst 3-point try and were handed a technical foul after the play. Lindhorst knocked down four of the five ensuing free throws to put the Loggers ahead. That kicked off an 8-0 go-ahead run for Lincoln Land, which outscored Sandburg 10-2 in the final 2:06.
SANDBURG STANDOUT
Brook Pieper led the Chargers with 16 points and 12 boards. The sophomore forward was 8 of 15 from the field. In addition to her double-double, Pieper had three steals and a block.
