GALESBURG — Alberto Fernandez Do Carmo converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute to finish off a stunning comeback by the Sandburg men's soccer team in a 3-2 win over Black Hawk on Wednesday night at Kleine Field.
The rally lifted the Chargers (9-2-2) to their sixth straight win, and they also remained unbeaten in their last seven matches, improving to 6-0-2 during that stretch. Sandburg's last loss came more than a month ago, a 3-1 defeat Sept. 8 at Truman.
Tied 2-2 in the closing seconds, Jaime Martin Caballero worked his way into the left side of the box and was taken down for a penalty with 21.9 seconds remaining. Fernandez Do Carmo, who'd whistled a shot just over the crossbar moments earlier, took the PK and tucked it inside the right post to set off a wild Chargers celebration.
Valentin Kretschmer scored the first two goals of the night for Sandburg, giving him his second two-goal contest of the season and the third of his Chargers career.
After Black Hawk opened the scoring with a rebound goal in the 48th minute, the Chargers evened it in the 62nd minute as Iker Garcia sent in a cross from the right side. It found Kretschmer on the left side of the goal, and his shot bounced off the right post before trickling into the net.
Black Hawk regained the lead at 2-1 on a goal off a restart in the 73rd minute, but the Chargers refused to go away.
In the 82nd minute, Ramon Ponga worked his way into the box on the right side and took a shot. His attempt was saved by the Braves keeper, but Kretschmer was on the doorstep to put away the rebound for the equalizer.
Sergi Cruz won his third straight game in net for Sandburg. The keeper stopped three of five Black Hawk shots on goal.
