Garcia collects 4 goals in Chargers’ 8-0 rout of Warhawks

GALESBURG — Luis Garcia scored four times and added an assist in the Sandburg men's soccer team's 8-0 romp over Wisconsin-Whitewater at Rock County on Thursday afternoon at Kleine Field.

It marked the most lopsided victory of the season for the Chargers (7-2-2), who won their fourth in a row and remained unbeaten in their last six matches. The contest was called after 70 minutes because of the mercy rule.

The outing marked the third career hat trick and first this season for Garcia, who had career highs of five goals and had six assists in Sandburg's win last year against the Warhawks.

Garcia scored the Chargers' first three goals Thursday, all in the first 15 minutes. Two of those were assisted by Valentin Kretschmer, who then added a goal of his own — from a Garcia assist — in the 21st minute for a 4-0 lead.

Leon Woldu's goal off a Ryan Lenihan feed in the 32nd minute helped the Chargers to a 5-0 halftime advantage.

Emiliano Sosa and Hugo Flores added tallies early in the second half before Garcia put away his fourth of the game in the 63rd minute.

In all, seven Chargers contributed at least one point in the victory. In addition to Garcia, Kretschmer (goal, two assists), Woldu (goal, assist) and Flores (goal, assist) were involved in multiple goals for Sandburg, which received votes in this week's NJCAA Division II rankings.

Sergi Cruz saved both shots on goal he faced while earning his first clean sheet of the season.
