Garcia strikes again, but Chargers settle for draw after late Elgin goal

ELGIN — The Sandburg men's soccer team settled for a 3-3 draw at Elgin on Thursday afternoon as the host Spartans scored the equalizer in the final minute of the match.

Trailing 2-1 in the second half, the Chargers (3-2-1) took the lead as Luis Egea and Emiliano Sosa scored back-to-back goals in a 3-minute span. Egea pulled Sandburg level in the 70th minute, and Sosa delivered a 3-2 lead with a goal in the 72nd minute.

Sandburg maintained that one-goal advantage until Elgin's Adrian Diaz connected for the game-tying goal — his second tally of the day — with just :53 left in the contest.

The Spartans (5-1-2), who received votes in this week's NJCAA Division II rankings, opened the scoring on Nick Prus' goal in the fifth minute.

Sandburg's Luis Garcia collected an unassisted goal in the 43rd minute to level the contest 1-1. It marked the fourth straight game with a goal for Garcia and his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Diaz's first goal of the day came in the 51st minute and gave Elgin a 2-1 lead.
