Sandburg baseball closes out 2026 schedule

CICERO — The Sandburg baseball team concluded its season over the weekend by hosting Prairie State on Friday before hitting the road to face Oakton on Saturday and Morton on Sunday.

The Chargers fell short of qualifying for the Region 4 tournament and concluded their season with a 13-35-1 overall record.

Chargers highlights
• After a one-out double by Chuck Hathaway in the seventh, Nathan Hill homered to right field to account for the Chargers' lone runs of the contest.

Sandburg standout
Starter Clayton Cawley kept the Chargers in the ballgame before handing it over to the bullpen in the sixth. Cawley allowed just one hit and three walks over 5.1 innings of work. The righthander from Metamora struck out four batters on 94 pitches.

Chargers highlights
Damien Snell opened the Chargers' first by reaching on an error, and he moved to third on Hathaway's double to center. With two out, Hill lined a single to left that brought in both runners for an early 2-1 lead.

Sandburg standout
Hill drove in both Sandburg runs and had two hits in three at-bats.

Chargers highlights
• Sandburg scored four two-out runs in the second for a 4-3 lead. Hill scored from second on a wild throw following Ramsey's infield single. An error by Oakton's shortstop on a grounder by Brady Veselack allowed Burke Miller to come in, and Damien Snell doubled in two more runs with a liner to center.
• Down 10-6 in the sixth, Hathaway's one-out single to center drove in two runs, and Hill added an RBI triple with two away to get Sandburg within a run.
• With one out in the ninth, Snell tripled to right field, and Jameson Dickerson came through with a base hit to left to even the score. A hit batsman and wild pitch helped in the bottom of the ninth, however, helped set up the Owls' walk-off single.

Sandburg standout
Snell finished a homer away from the cycle, going 3 for 6 with a double, a triple, a run scored and three RBIs out of the leadoff spot.
