Barrientos throws 5 hitless innings out of 'pen in Chargers' tie with Elgin

GALESBURG — Brandon Barrientos pitched five hitless innings out of the bullpen in Game 2 of the Sandburg baseball team's doubleheader Tuesday at home against Elgin.

The Chargers dropped the opener 10-5, and the teams settled for a 2-2 tie in Game 2 as the contest was called after 10 innings because of darkness.

Chargers highlights
• The Chargers loaded the bases in the first inning behind walks from Damien Snell, Colton Allen and Chuck Hathaway. Nathan Hill then cleared the bags by cracking a grand slam to right field for an early 4-0 lead.
Jameson Dickerson knocked in Sandburg's other run with an RBI single in the fifth that scored Kody Knecht

Sandburg standout
Dickerson finished 2 for 2 and reached base three times. The left fielder from Galesburg had base hits in the third and fifth innings in addition to drawing a walk in the seventh. He also stole a pair of bases.

Chargers highlights
• Scoreless in the third, Knecht put Sandburg ahead by drilling a solo homer to right to lead off the inning. The homer was the first of the season for the freshman from Lowpoint-Washburn High School.

• After the Spartans scratched across a run in the top of the seventh without a hit to go up 2-1, Hathaway evened the game by leading off the bottom of the inning with a line-drive home run to center. 

Sandburg standout
After five innings of one-run ball by Tyson Lewis, Barrientos was nearly untouchable in five innings out of the bullpen. The lefty out of Pekin didn't allow a hit and struck out six batters against one walk. The outing was the longest of the year for Barrientos, and he doubled his previous best for strikeouts. He threw 47 of his 81 pitches for strikes.
