Chargers top Highland behind Lewis' strong relief appearance

GALESBURG — Tyson Lewis came through with a stellar relief outing, and the Sandburg baseball team ran rampant on the basepaths in a 14-10 win over Highland on Tuesday afternoon.

The victory gave the Chargers, who racked up 11 steals in the nine-inning game, an Arrowhead Conference series win over the Cougars after the teams split a doubleheader Saturday at Highland.

Chargers highlights
• Down 4-1 in the bottom of the second, the Chargers took the lead for good with a seven-run frame. Damien Snell's two-run homer to left gave Sandburg a 5-4 advantage. Brady Veselack and Carter Chapin had RBI hits in the inning, and Carter Ramsey drove in two with a single.
• Sandburg took a 14-7 lead to the ninth before the Cougars scored three times. With two out and a runner on first, Highland stroked a double to right and tried to send the runner home. But the Chargers' relay of right fielder Griffen Landsverk to shortstop Veselack to catcher Colton Allen gunned them down at home to end the game.

Sandburg standout
While the Sandburg lineup collected 10 hits on the day, Tyson Lewis came up with four impressive innings in relief to earn his first victory as a Charger. The freshman from Ontario, Canada, allowed just three hits and three walks while fanning five batters. Lewis came on in the fourth, pitched into the eighth and threw 44 of his 73 pitches for strikes.
