Veselack, Hathaway homer in Chargers’ season-opening series 

 

SAUGET — The Sandburg baseball team opened its season with a three-game weekend series against Three Rivers at Arsenal BG Ballpark. The Chargers dropped Saturday's nine-inning contest as well as both ends of Sunday's doubleheader.

Key moments 
• Brady Veselack got the scoring for the season started with a solo home run with one out in the first inning, giving Sandburg an early 1-0 lead. 
• The Raiders took a 5-1 lead after the second and blew the game open with five hits in a nine-run fourth inning.

Braley Burford reached base four times, going 2 for 2 with a double, two walks and an RBI.

Key moments
• A two-run homer as part of a four-run third inning gave Three Rivers a 5-0 lead. 
• The Chargers got on the board in the fourth as they loaded the bases on a hit batsman and two walks. Carter Ramsey and Kody Knecht then scored on back-to-back wild pitches to make it 5-2, but Sandburg wouldn't get any closer.  

Sandburg standout 
Ramsey singled, reached on a hit by pitch, scored twice and stole a base.

Key moments 
Down 5-0 in the fifth, Chuck Hathaway swatted a two-run homer to get Sandburg on the board. Ramsey's RBI groundout in the sixth made it a 5-3 game. Knecht singled and Jameson Dickerson reached on an error with two out to put the tying run on, but a groundout ended the threat.

Hathaway drove in two with his fifth-inning home run to right field as he finished 1 for 4.
