Wiegand deals on mound, delivers at plate in Chargers’ split with Black Hawk

GALESBURG — Austin Wiegand shined at the plate and on the mound in Game 1, and Frank Kelch homered in both contests as the Carl Sandburg College baseball team split an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader against Black Hawk on Tuesday at the Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.

KEY MOMENT
Three first-inning runs helped the Chargers on their way to a 6-0 lead after frames. Five straight Sandburg batters reached with one out in the first. Derek Castillo single and came around to score on a wild pitch, and Chase Mason's RBI hit brought in Wiegand. Later, Kelch stroked a single to left, bringing home Mason for a 3-0 advantage.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
While the Chargers added on early, Wiegand kept the Braves' bats at bay. He held Black Hawk scoreless into the fifth inning and finished two outs shy of a complete game. The lefty surrendered four hits (all singles) and a pair of walks while striking out four on 98 pitches. At the dish, Wiegand went 2 for 3 with a double, a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base.

KEY MOMENT
A pair of three-run homers highlighted an eight-run second inning for the Braves.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Kelch reached base twice, scored twice and drove in two. He popped a two-run home run in the second to get the Chargers on the board, then led off the fourth with a walk and came around to score.
