Prince’s HR, Wolf’s HBP Deliver Walk-Off Wins for Chargers vs. Elgin

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College baseball team opened its home schedule in thrilling fashion Saturday as the Chargers earned a pair of extra-inning walk-off victories against Elgin at the Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.

GAME 1
Sandburg 7, Elgin 4 (9 innings)

KEY MOMENTS
• Down 3-2 in the sixth, the Chargers loaded the bases with three walks to open the inning, and Jose Narvaez put Sandburg on top with a two-run double to left.
• The teams went into extras after the Spartans, down to their last out, plated the tying run on an RBI double in the seventh. It stayed 4-4 into the ninth, when Payton Hankins and Chase Mason began the frame with back-to-back singles. Will Prince then smashed a three-run home run to right to clinch the Chargers' walk-off win.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
In addition to his game-winning blast, Prince drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth inning and finished with four RBIs.

KEY MOMENT
• After a four-run fifth put Elgin ahead 6-2, Sandburg answered with three runs in the bottom half. Chase Mason's base hit to left with the bases loaded brought home two, and Prince added an RBI groundout.
• With runners at the corners and one out in the sixth, Narvaez tied the game with a bunt base hit that plated Austin Wiegand, who led off with a single.
• Wiegand opened the eighth with another single, and an Elgin error and intentional walk loaded the bases with nobody out. With one away, Noah Wolf was plunked with a full-count pitching, forcing in Wiegand and giving the Chargers a second straight walk-off win.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
On top of getting the win on the mound, Mason finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs. The redshirt sophomore homered in the first to go along with his two-run single in the fifth. He then pitched two shutout innings in relief without allowing a hit. Mason walked two and struck out one in the appearance.
