Stoneking's Shutout, Brown's Go-Ahead Hit Give Chargers Sweep at Sauk Valley

STERLING — Parker Stoneking threw a three-hit shutout in Game 1, and the Carl Sandburg College baseball team pulled out a 10-inning victory in Game 2 to sweep an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader at Sauk Valley on Tuesday.

KEY MOMENT
Already up 4-0 in the fourth, Logan Korte blew the game open with a two-out, three-run home run to center, putting the Chargers ahead by a touchdown.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Stoneking needed only 58 pitches to complete a three-hit shutout in the run-rule victory. He struck out five, didn't walk a batter and threw 42 of his pitches for strikes. Stoneking has yet to allow a run in 14 innings against Arrowhead Conference opponents. He also has three wins in as many league appearances.

KEY MOMENTS
• Michael Kleinhans delivered a two-run single to right with two out in the fourth to give the Chargers a 2-1 lead.
• Sandburg took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh, but the Skyhawks tied it on a two-base error that brought in two runs with two out inning.
• Still tied at 3 in the 10^th, the Chargers strung together four straight one-out hits. Jack Barham singled to left, and Hunter Caves pushed him to third with a double. Brown lined a base hit to left to bring in Barham with the go-ahead run, and Shields gave Sandburg some insurance with an RBI hit to right that plated Caves.
• Van Heuklon closed out the sweep with a 1-2-3 10^th inning for the save.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Called upon with the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the seventh, Bruington came up clutch with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to earn the victory. The sophomore southpaw allowed just one hit and struck out two while collecting his first win of the season.
