Ball, Kelch Homer Twice, Stoneking Delivers in Relief for Split Against Kougars

GALESBURG — Mitch Ball and Frank Kelch each homered twice in Game 2 as the Carl Sandburg College baseball team bounced back from a loss in the opener to split an Arrowhead Conference doubleheader with Kishwaukee on Tuesday at the Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.

KEY MOMENTS
• The Chargers jumped to a quick 3-0 lead in the first, getting a two-run single from Logan Van Heuklon and an RBI base hit by Kelch.
• The Kougars answered back with three in the third to it, scoring on a double steal and back-to-back two-out doubles.
• Kishwaukee plated the go-ahead run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Van Heuklon went 2 for 3 with a two-run single, a triple and a run scored.

KEY MOMENTS
• An RBI double and two-run home put Kishwaukee ahead 3-0 in the first, but the Chargers' bats woke up in the second, scoring five times to take the lead. Kelch homered to center to get Sandburg on the board and Payton Hankins dunked in an RBI double to left before Ball launched a two-run homer to left for a 5-3 lead.
• Leading 9-3 in the sixth, Kelch led off with another home run to center. Aidan Parkins brought in a run with an RBI single and Ball ended the game via mercy rule by swatting a homer to left.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Parker Stoneking delivered five shutout innings after coming on in emergency relief. Starter Jason Hise exited after the first inning with a medical issue, but Stoneking followed up by keeping the Kougars off the board for the remainder of the contest. The freshman lefthander allowed just three hits (all singles), struck out three and didn't issue a walk. He had 39 of his 50 pitches go for strikes.
