Chargers Come Up Just Short vs. No. 2 Madison

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College baseball team raced to an early lead, but second-ranked Madison answered with a big inning and held on to beat the Chargers 10-9 in a nine-inning game Tuesday at Illinois State's Duffy Bass Field.

KEY MOMENTS
• The Chargers (22-18) got out to a 6-0 lead through four innings. Sandburg opened with four runs in the first as Mitch Ball (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) and Jack Shields (Peoria Heights, Ill./Notre Dame) each delivered two-run singles.
• The WolfPack went ahead with a seven-run fifth inning, sending 11 batters to the dish.
• Down 10-7 in the ninth, the Chargers pulled within a run on a two-run home run by Jack Barham (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap). Ashton Johnson (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield) followed with a base hit to put the tying run on base, but Chase Mason (Washington, Ill./Washington) grounded out to short to end the game.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Cam Scott (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) reached base three times for Sandburg, going 2 for 4 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Scott walked and scored in the first, singled and scored in the third and doubled in the eighth.

KISHWAUKEE GAMES TO BE PLAYED AT SANDBURG
The Chargers' Arrowhead Conference doubleheader scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kishwaukee has been moved to Sandburg. The Chargers can clinch share of the conference title with a victory and win it outright with a sweep.
