Chargers Hammer Highland Twice to Stay Atop Conference Standings

FREEPORT — Logan Korte (Metropolis, Ill./Massac County) homered in both games and the Carl Sandburg College baseball team maintained its first-place standing in the Arrowhead Conference after pummeling Highland in a doubleheader sweep Saturday afternoon.

The Chargers (19-15, 14-2) sit alone atop the league standings with four conference games remaining.

Key Moment
Sandburg led 6-0 in the seventh before sending 19 batters to the plate and scoring 14 times to blow the game wide open. At one point, 16 consecutive Chargers batters reached base, and every player in the Sandburg lineup reached safely during the inning.

Sandburg Standout
Starter Silas Israel (Tremont, Ill./Tremont) whiffed 12 batters and didn't issue a walk in a four-hit shutout. Israel didn't allow an extra-base hit, threw 63 of his 86 pitches for strikes and allowed just two runners to reach scoring position. The Cougars did not push a runner to third in the contest.

Key Moment
The Chargers plated six two-out runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 10-2. Mitch Ball (East Peoria, Ill./East Peoria) cleared the bases with a three-run double, Logan Van Heuklon (Dunlap, Ill./Dunlap) brought home two with a single and Brett Macak capped the inning with an RBI base hit to center.

Sandburg Standout
Coming off a three-homer game Thursday at Illinois Central, Van Heuklon added another dinger with a solo shot to center in the second to open the scoring. The third baseman finished 3 for 5 with three runs driven in.
