Koech, Chargers win Arrowhead Conference XC titles

DIXON — Led by individual champion Linda Jepkogei Koech, the Sandburg women's cross country team cruised to the conference title at the Arrowhead Conference Championships on Saturday at Kishwaukee.

The Chargers had the first four finishers in the women's 5-kilometer run, totaling 15 points to outdistance runner-up Illinois Valley's 44 points.

Koech won the conference title by almost 45 seconds, finishing in 21 minutes, 19.3 seconds. Teammate Joan Jepngetich was second in 22:03.3, and right behind her at 22:04.4 were Sharon Yego and Damaris Kimaiyo. Koech, Jepngetich, Yego and Kimaiyo each earned spots on the all-conference team with their performances.

The Chargers' fifth scorer was Ascar Jepchirchir, who placed eighth in 25:29.7.

In the men's 8K, freshman Mathias Kiprotich placed fifth to lead Sandburg and earn all-conference honors. Kiprotich finished the race in 30:02.9.

The Chargers totaled 50 points and finished second to Sauk Valley, which scored 16. Illinois Valley was third with 67 points.

Sophomore Collines Chelak had a top-10 time for Sandburg, placing 10th in 30:47.2. Titus Kimutai was 11th in 30:50.8.
