Chargers rout Kishwaukee in conference opener as 5 reach double figures

MALTA — Five Chargers reached double figures in scoring, and Paige Huffman Brook Pieper each recorded double-doubles in the Sandburg women's basketball team's 104-39 rout at Kishwaukee on Tuesday in the Chargers' Arrowhead Conference opener.

Sandburg (11-6, 1-0) raced to a 30-3 lead after the opening quarter and held a 54-13 advantage at halftime.

Sandburg's 104 points were the most they've put up in a game during the Kellen Fernetti era. The previous high was 100 on Feb. 17, 2024, against Waubonsee.

Tiera Hall, making just her second start of the season, scored a game-high and season-best 20 to lead the Chargers. Hall was 8 of 12 from the floor, 4 of 5 at the free-throw line and had five rebounds, six assists and five steals. Hall's previous high in scoring this season was 13, set Nov. 13 against Eureka JV and Dec. 11 against Spoon River.

Antonia Kisler totaled 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three steals for Sandburg.

Pieper had 18 points and 11 boards while going 7 of 10 from the field, including 2 for 3 from 3-point distance. The sophomore forward also contributed three assists, four steals and four blocks.

Huffman had a dozen points and a season-best 18 rebounds for her first double-double as a Charger. The freshman from Wethersfield High School tripled her previous high for rebounds in a game. It marked Huffman's first double-digit scoring night since she had a season-high 17 on Dec. 4 at John Wood.

Freshman Layni Dobbins knocked down a pair of 3s and tallied a season-best 12 points for Sandburg.

The Chargers were two points away from matching their fewest allowed in a game this season. They gave up 37 on Dec. 20 at DuPage.

Sandburg totaled a whopping 80 rebounds and had 38 on the offensive glass. Both marks were season highs.
