Gerardo Ruvalcaba took over as the Sandburg men's soccer coach in December 2022 following one season on the sidelines as an assistant.

With Ruvalcaba on staff during the 2022 season, the Chargers upset 10th-ranked Prairie State, which would go on to win the NJCAA Division II championship. Sandburg qualified for the Region 4 Division II tournament before falling in the quarterfinals in a rematch with Prairie State.

A lifelong soccer player, Ruvalcaba owns GJR Barbershop & SMP in Monmouth, where he lives with his wife, Janey Mar, and three children: sons Lukaz and Jurgen and daughter Gianna.
