Chargers’ 2nd-half flurry leads to 5-1 win in season opener

GALESBURG — The Sandburg men's soccer team gleamed under the lights in its season opener Friday evening at Kleine Field, earning a 5-1 Region 4 win over Malcolm X.

The Chargers (1-0) tallied four unanswered goals in the second half to dispatch the visiting Hawks. Sophomore Enrico Augusto Rola scored once and added two assists to lead Sandburg in the victory.

Tyrese Obonnia opened the scoring off a Rola assist in the 23rd minute. Coming in from right wing, Obonnia worked through a Malcolm X defender, poked a touch past the Hawks goalie and tapped it into the empty net for a 1-0 lead.

Malcolm X quickly evened the match in the 25th minute, and the teams went into halftime tied 1-1.

It stayed that way until the 61st minute, when the Chargers strung together four straight goals in a span of 14 minutes. Rola picked up his second assist as he fed Caio Olivera for the go-ahead strike, then Hugo Flores made it 3-1 in the 68th minute off an assist from Leon Woldu.

Obonnia fed Rola in the 72nd minute to make it 4-1, and Alberto Fernandez Do Carmo converted a penalty kick in the 75th minute to account for the final score.

Keeper Sergi Cruz made three saves to earn the victory in net for Sandburg.

The Chargers had seven of their 17 shot attempts end up on frame.
