Sandburg’s Robertson, Wake wrap up stay at men’s golf nationals
PLYMOUTH, Ind. — Sandburg freshmen Colby Robertson and Tanner Wake battled through challenging conditions in the first two days as they competed at the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship from Tuesday-Friday at Swan Lake Resort's Black Course.
Both players bounced back from a difficult first round that featured steady rain and strong winds, causing multiple delays. Robertson finished tied for 95th with a total of 323 for the 72-hole tournament. Wake placed 109th at 332 for the event.
Robertson, who won the Midwest District Championship and had posted eight straight rounds in the 70s entering nationals, opened with an uncharacteristic 14-over-par 86 in the poor weather.
The Illini West High School product rebounded with a 3-over 75 in the second round. His day featured three birdies on the back nine while shooting an even-par 36. Robertson closed the tournament with scores of 83 and 79.
Wake, who punched his ticket to nationals with an eighth-place finish at the district tournament, started with a 91 before putting up back-to-back rounds in the 70s in the middle of the tournament.
The freshman from Elmwood shot a 5-over 77 in the second round and carded a 79 in Round 3. Wake made three straight birdies on Nos. 3-5 in the third round, and he added a birdie on the par-4 10th. He finished his tournament with a final-round 85.
This marked the 13th straight year and 17th time in the last 18 seasons the Chargers have advanced an individual or qualified as a team for the national tournament.
