Sandburg men’s golf takes 3rd at Fighting Scot Fall Invite
MONMOUTH — In a tournament littered with four-year programs, the Sandburg men's golf team finished in third place at the Fighting Scot Fall Invite on Saturday and Sunday at Gibson Woods.
The Chargers, one of only two two-year schools in the 11-team field, entered the final round in second place and finished third overall despite almost matching their first-round total.
Sandburg's top three overall finishers were within two shots of one another. Logan Beers led the way, placing 10th individually after posting rounds of 75 and 77.
Tanner Wake was a shot behind Beers, in 11th place. Wake was the biggest mover in Round 2, jumping up 21 spots on the leaderboard after shooting a 1-over-par 72 in Sunday's final round.
Freshman Sam Cory tied for 12th after posting two rounds in the 70s. Cory shot a 5-over 76 on Saturday and closed with a 78.
Sandburg shot a season-low 307 in the first round to trail only Knox. The Chargers closed with a 308 for a 615 total for the tournament. Waldorf had a tournament-best 290 in the final round to leapfrog the Chargers for second place. Knox, at 583 for the championship, beat Waldorf by 18 shots.
Sandburg finished ahead of seven teams from four-year programs, including Augustana, Monmouth, Illinois College, Blackburn and Culver-Stockton.
Waldorf's Thomas Houdayer posted a 5-under 66 on Sunday to edge Briggs Bossert of Monmouth by one shot for the individual title.
