Late 3-point play sinks Chargers at McHenry County
CRYSTAL LAKE — Keauntrey Barnes hit a clutch 3-pointer in the final minute, but McHenry County answered with a game-winning three-point play in the closing seconds to beat the Sandburg men's basketball team 72-70 on Tuesday.
Trailing 69-67, Barnes drained a trey with 18.9 seconds to play to give the Chargers a one-point lead. The host Scots, though, answered with an and-one with :12.1 left by Malachi Barrett to retake the lead. Barrett finished off the traditional three-point play to account for the final score.
Sandburg (6-6) got a clean look at the buzzer to win it, but Larry Olivier Jr.'s 3-point try from the top of the key hit off the back of the rim.
Rylan Carton had a team-best 15 points for the Sandburg, including three 3s. It marked the sixth straight game in double figures for the freshman from Sherrard.
Barnes also hit three 3s and finished with 14 points in the contest. Sophomore guard Ralph Wires scored 13 for the Chargers, who led 35-31 at the break.
Barrett finished with 23 points to lead all players.
