Carton puts up 16 for Chargers in loss at Rock Valley

ROCKFORD — Led by a hot first half and a big edge on the glass, Rock Valley dealt the Sandburg men's basketball team a 92-58 road loss Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles, receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division II rankings, led 45-31 at halftime after shooting 52 percent in the first 20 minutes, including an 8-for-17 mark from 3-point range.

Rylan Carton's 16 points led three Chargers (5-4) who scored in double figures. The freshman from Sherrard was 5 of 10 from the field and 5 for 7 from the foul line. Carton also had four assists.

Sophomore point guard Ralph Wires had 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting for Sandburg. Keauntrey Barnes finished with 10 points and a team-leading seven rebounds.

Rock Valley's Jajuan Cozark scored a game-best 25 points on 10-for-13 shooting. JT Samuels added 23 points for the Golden Eagles, who outrebounded the Chargers 43-26.
