Chargers Wrap Up Regular Season With 2-1 Loss to Chaps

GALESBURG — The Carl Sandburg College men's soccer team closed its regular season with a 2-1 loss to DuPage on Sunday afternoon at Kleine Field.

The Chargers (5-6-1 overall, 5-5-1 Region IV) doubled up the Chaparrals on shot attempts, 20-10, but DuPage broke a tie game with a penalty kick in the 65^th minute and held on for the victory.

DuPage opened the scoring in the 13^th minute, but Sandburg evened the match in the 29^th minute behind Jean Forestal's team-leading 13^th goal of the season. Santiago Palacio sent in a ball into the box from 35 yards out. A header from Saul Etienne was stopped by the Chaparrals' keeper, but Forestal was there to put away the rebound at point-blank range for the equalizer.

Sandburg had two quality scoring chances in the opening minutes of the second half. Matteo Rissato Prado had a header in the 47^th minute that hit off the top of the crossbar. Etienne had a blast in the 48^th minute that looked destined for the top right corner, but DuPage's keeper was able to make a leaping save with his left hand.

The Chaparrals broke the tie in the 65^th minute when they were awarded a penalty after a player was taken down in the box. Jason Fuentes converted it with a shot to the left side for a 2-1 lead.

Sandburg played down a man for the final 19 minutes after Sebastien Bornelus was sent off with a red card following a foul from behind.

Benjamin Hilton made three saves on five shots on goal in the loss.

UP NEXT FOR SANDBURG
Region IV tournament quarterfinals at noon Sunday at the higher seed. The Chargers will learn their seed and opponent later this week.
